Psy reflects on his past hardships, his music, and his philosophy

Singer Psy has been living the good life lately.
After 4 years of absence from the industry, he was finally able to make a passionate comeback with the music he loves for the fans who are wildly enthusiastic for his every performance.
Star News was able to sit down with Psy, and draw out his personal reflections about his 10-year career. The reporter started off by asking Psy if he had any ‘burdens’ to worry over as he was making his comeback. Psy replied,
“Any burdens about my comeback? Of course there were – after all, I was going to stand up on stage in front of fans after a long absence.
People also started saying that I was the backbone of K-pop. First off, I love receiving acceptance from fellow industry workers. One time I was at my rehearsal for a music program, and I saw that fellow singers and even their backup dancers were all watching me. To be honest, when I released my album, I was really curious to see what the industry would make of it.”
Ever since his debut back in 2000 with ‘Bird‘, the singer-songwriter has become known as an artist with a venomous stage presence, who can singlehandedly capture the attention of his viewers with his eye-catching dances and powerful stamina.
Yet Psy isn’t just limited to extravagent performances alone – he also has the capability to demonstrate the softer side of his musical abilities, as seen in his track ‘In My Eyes’ featuring Lee Jae Hoon.
Yet Psy’s career experienced a decline, when his subjective views and his personal life became the subject of much public criticism. As a result, his music and his talents were ridiculed or underestimated.
But Psy refused to let the downfall spiral beyond his hands. He always thought positively, and tried to channel whatever problems he had into his music.
“Looking back at my 10 years, I think I was able to overcome everything by really thinking affirmatively. Whatever happened, instead of being discouraged, I only thought of pulling through. This was only possible because I had my music. Even if I was reborn, I want to live a life thinking how I do right now. If I never ended up doing music, I think I would’ve been a loser.”
Because Psy understands the importance of music, he also did not forget to mention little tips for his hoobaes.
“I remember what Lee Seung Chul hyung told Huh Gak when he won Superstar K2 not long ago. Seung Chul hyung said, “Instead of trying to make abs, focus more on your singing”. I really want my hoobaes to focus more on their singing and their music as well. Also, I’d like them to be more natural and free flowing when doing music.”
Psy may look very light-hearted and joyful, but he still feels frustration and pain during the days he finds himself not being able to produce the music he wants. This is why he loves performing on stage with music he has already given birth to.
“I feel like a real singer when I hold concerts. Concerts are considered as one of the very few ‘offline’ events you can hold these days in the music industry. Many actors have said that they are most envious when singers get to hold concerts. Even though I really like making others feel happier than I am, I must say, I love concerts so much that I could go crazy just thinking about it.”
Psy is currently promoting his comeback track, “Right Now“, from his 5th album (aptly named) “PSYFIVE“.
